2021: Sustainable, personalised gifting is where it’s at.

Documenting a maker’s creations.

Client: Bec the Maker. Project: Logo, packaging, cards, stickers.

Bec the maker was a passion project. I wanted to be able to share some of my making ideas with the maker community. I also wanted to remove any single use plastic from my workshop, keeping my processes sustainable.

One of the most influential Makers I know, inspired me to start making goods for sale. In the past I have either gifted everything I’ve made or had the occasional commission to make an art piece for someone else.

Using design and marketing skill, I created a brand to best represent my making habit. The form for BTM was designed to symbolise me, ‘B’ using a tool ‘T’, to make an object ‘M’. A colour palette using bold colours that would work well across digital apps and a black and white version to easily reproduce for printed media.

I opted straight away for a Facebook and Instagram profile to document the beginnings of this project. Using the Later app for scheduling all creative content. Fortnightly scheduling to showcase pieces that had been completed.

Following an unexpected demand I built a eCommerce site to sell some pre-designed pieces online as well as offer a custom design and proof service. This will no doubt change and grow as time goes on.

Every piece receives the same level of care. Every customer the highest level of customer experience.

Embrace openness. Be thoughtful. Take your time.

The most challenging aspect for anyone working on their own is to invest time in promoting new products. I’ve found engaging with existing customers through email marketing to be incredibly helpful when working through new product development.

Giving people the option to be involved, offering feedback (good & bad) to help define direction for future products. I like to think that anyone that is involved in this process becomes part of the maker community.
